LIVING ON THE EDGE
Living Green garnered five prestigious awards at the 2008 San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. The collaborative effort, with designer Tim O'Shea and landscape contractors Rock and Rose Landscapes, won over the crowds with a believable, multi-terraced garden set in the context of a California coastal canyon. The boulder-laden planting palette ranged from drought-tolerant natives, including an overstory of specimen interior live oaks, to exotic proteas, succulents, and companion plantings from continents as far flung as South Africa and Australia. SAUSALITO HILLSIDE GARDEN
Formerly a slope of dense, mature Black Acacia trees, the hillside was clearcut and pits were excavated for plantings of large clumps of Chinese Timber Bamboo (Phyllostachys Vivax). A landmark planting of cold-hardy, exotic looking, Chinese Fountain Palms (Livistona Chinensis), was interspaced as a subtropical counterpoint to the linear bamboo. Finally, "no-mow" fescue sod was rolled out to create a lush, year-round, low maintenance carpet of shiny green. "Yellow Waves" phormiums and "Japanese Blood Grasses" add a random stroke of color and seasonality to an otherwise green landscape. The accompanying photos were taken less than six months after the landscape was installed.
