Large Fossil of Devonian Mass Extinction Event from 450 Million Years Ago
This cluster of larger ammonites and clam shells shows a great amount of attention paid to safely removing the piece from the surrounding fossilized silt. Note the fingery edges of the large ammonite shells.
From the Greek amethustos ‘not drunken’ because the stone was believed to prevent intoxication. However, Amethyst was a young virgin who became the object of wrath of the Greek God Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine. Although she was a given the defense of being white, shimmering stone, the wine spilled on her and she became purple, now synonymous with the word amethyst.
